Summary on Grant Application Form |
The industrial application of high-performance polymer coatings has been restricted by the limitations of the existing coating processes. The proposed project will develop a new process providing an ultra-high velocity flameless jet created by a pressurised converging-diverging nozzle system. The equipment will incorporate electrical preheating of the inlet gases-feedstock powders and the constructions of a protective shield immediately downstream from the torch nozzle. The deposition mechanism will be either plastic impact or liquid impact depending upon the conditions used. It will allow the formation of high-viscosity polymer coatings and composites, which cannot be produced by the existing industrial processes. The new process will also enable on-site spraying of large components, which is impracticable with the existing industrial powder coating techniques. Computer modelling, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and materials science will be used to develop a process that is an order of magnitude cheaper than the existing plasma and HVOF processes.
