Summary on Grant Application Form
There is presently no facility in the UK which can be used by the academic and industrial research community, capable of imaging and analysing the magnetic behaviour of a wide range of materials and devices at very high frequencies with a minimum of sample preparation. This is a particular drawback to developments in information storage, but has much wider implications throughout the Advanced Magnetics Programme. It is intended to construct a facility, based around a confocal scanning laser microscope, which will remedy this situation and provide a comprehensive dynamic test environment for the magnetics community. A combination of pulsed and c.w. lasers will be used to illuminate either full-field or in a diffraction-limited scanned spot. Full-field imaging in low light/low contrast will be undertaken by a cooled ccd camera and diffraction-limited scanned imaging by multiple photodiodes with sub-ns response speed. For vector analysis of planar magnetisations with very weak signals a network/spectrum analyser with dc to 500MHz bandwidth will give adequate signal recovery for imaging. Confocal, short wavelength imaging with high NA lenses should enable 250nm resolution.
