Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal involves basic research into the relative performance of different design concepts for guided bus screen. The research will examine both the traffic engineering and signal control issues surrounding bus schemes. A large number of local authorities will be consulted in order to establish current best practice with regard to such schemes in the UK. In order to assess performance, three test sites will be selected as part of this consultation exercise. Issue to be considered with regard to these sites are: the location and operation of the guideway; entry and exit control; turning movements; pedestrian/bus passenger access and bus service levels. The main tool to be used for evaluation is a microsimulation package to which source code modifications can be made to represent the unique aspects of guided bus schemes. The evaulation impacts will include: guided bus journey times and delays; ordinary bus journey times and delays; non-bus journey times and delays; queues; pedestrian delays and pollutant emissions. The results of these simulations will better inform the transport community on how best to implement such schemes on street.
