Summary on Grant Application Form |
A novel instrument will be developed to study photodissociation of polyatomic molecules, based on the selective detection of fragment molecules with zero kinetic energy. The photodissociating laser frequency will be scanned through the series of energy thresholds corresponding to the production of fragments in specific vibration-rotation states. One of the molecular fragments will be detected by two-colour laser excitation to high Rydberg states, followed by pulsed-field ionisation after transmission through an octopole analyser. Only those fragments with near-zero kinetic energy (<5 cm-1) will pass through the analyser. The state-selective detection of fragment 1 ensures that peaks are observed in the spectrum only at thresholds corresponding to the quantum states of fragment 2 which can be formed in conjunction with the selected quantum state of fragment 1, ie, the correlation between fragment quantum states will be determined at threshold. The results will be a strong indicator of non-statistical unimolecular decay mechanisms in polyatomic molecules.
