A combined electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance/probe beam deflection (EQCM/PBD) instrument will be built, for the purpose of studying interfacial electrochemical processes. The instrument will exploit the complementary strengths and sensitivities of electrochemical, gravimetric and optical techniques: electrochemistry will be used to control and measure the overall reaction rate; the QCM will monitor electrochemically driven changes in surface populations of ions and solvent, via the associated electrode mass changes; PBD measurements will provide related information, via changes in the local solution composition. Correlation of charge, mass and optical data acquired using the combined instrument will avoid a range of electrode history problems associated with application of the individual techniques to different electrodes, or even sequentially to the same electrode. Information from the combined technique will also facilitate the study of electroactive films in greater detail and under less restrictive conditions, for example with respect to electrolyte composition, than hitherto possible. The methodology has relevance to chemistry employed in energy conversion and storage, electrocatalysis/clean technology, electronic and optical devices, corrosion, electroanalysis and separation science.
