There is a growth of applications based upon the visualisation of 3D databases and tele-remote environments and for a number of tasks, stereoscopic information is critical. The problem with current stereoscopic displays is that they do NOT support natural vision. This project will document the interaction between neural control mechanisms in natural vision and 3D stereoscopic displays and clarify the issues arising from the use of conventional stereoscopic displays. More importantly we will then explore solutions to these problems by transforming the rendered viewpoint and introducing focal adjustments on the basis of the convergent visual axes, in order to offset the discord that is present in conventional stereoscopic displays. A further stage of the project will then translate the paradigm to a display system that responds to low-frequency eye-movements. A stereoscopic viewing system with user responsive, convergent projection axes allows the user to view a 3D database or tele-remote environment using stereoscopic vision in a natural way. This research will establish psychophysical tolerances for such a system in terms of response speed and windows of coherence.
