Alkali phosphate and borate glass systems are produced readily in the laboratory and offer compositional choice covering a wide range of basicity. They are sufficiently fluid at e.g. 1000C to allow completion, in a reasonable time, of equilibria for redox reactions of the type indicated by eqn.1 (above). After quenching, their ultraviolet/visible spectra will be recorded, and deconvolution will allow estimation of the redox lower/upper ratio. The variation of the redox ratio will be correlated with optical basicity, and these relationships will be combined so that they apply to equilibria involving two ion couples, e.g. Mn2+ + V5+ = Mn3+ + V4+, in order to indicate how these equilibria vary with glass basicity. The purpose of the project is to confirm that the behaviour predicted from optical basicity is borne out experimentally, so that the behaviour of ion couples, or their combinations, can be predicted in any oxidic glass melt.
