Summary on Grant Application Form
The principal aim is to investigat the degree and nature of reaction induced by the passage of a shock wave in model liquid explosive systems of theoretical and practical importance. The materials of interest in this proposal are the liquids hydrogen peroxide and 2-nitropropane. The data generated will have important practical implications concerning the safe handling, transport and storage of explosives and in related industries such as fertiliser manufacture, as well as providing a deeper insight into the nature of these systems.Thermodynamic data will be generated at stresses below that necessary to induce detonation. Spectroscopy will be used in order to follow reaction in real time through the reaction zone behind the shock front. Fundamental issues concerning ignition behind a shock front and the structure of the reactive wave will be addressed. Additionally, the results will be used to develop predictive chemical reaction schemes for ultimate implementation in finite-element hydrocodes. Collaboration with theoretical workers at Cranfield, East Anglia and Manchester Universities and ICI concerning the design and implementation of the codes will be undertaken.
