Novel synthetic routes and new compounds are initially difficult to establish and control because the important parameters have yet to be identified. One successful method of overcoming the problem is to study a sample by several techniques and always in the same sample chamber (eg Surface studies with Auger, LEED and TPD). Neutron scattering has the demonstrated ability to determine structure and dynamics simultaneously from a sample but in practice this is difficult and rarely done. The early stages of a new spectrometer, OSIRIS, are being constructed. This proposal will equip OSIRIS with the necessary tools (spin flippers) to exploit neutron spin polarisation techniques, which will eliminate the previous difficulties with the method. Structure and dynamics can then be measured for systems of real chemical interest not simply in the same sample chamber but in the same experiment.
