Summary on Grant Application Form |
The efficiency of large area CdTe/CdS solar cells is currently limited to efficiencies of ~11%. If this system is to completely fulfil its potential economic and technological promise the nature of the microscopic mechanisms currently limiting the efficiency must be identified. In this program we propose to use a range of optical and microstructural techniques to identify the non radiative paths that are currently limiting the efficiency of CdTe/CdS solar cells. The novel approach in this proposal is the use of highly spatially resolved (~1nm) microscopy techniques provided by a scanning probe transmission electron microscope in conjunction with optical studies of minority carrier lifetime and low temperature luminescence and excitation spectroscopy. This combined approach will enable us to pinpoint the microstructural defects responsible for the non radiative paths. This information will be fed back into the development program of the industrial collaborator to enable the production of solar cells whose efficiency will be sufficient, ie >18%, to enable this system to be fully exploited.
