Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main purpose of this application is the design of a photovoltaic roof tile that could easily be integrated into many tiled roofs. The proposed design for the PV-tile is unique with major advantages over existing designs such as those produced in Japan and Switzerland. The planned approach is to investigate the development of various composite materials for the total fabrication of the mechanical struacture, fittings and roof integration of the PV-tile. The use of new composites for the tile structure represents an approach that has not been utilised in the past. It has the added advantage of producing a complete integral structure for the tile that could easily be manufactured and installed in the normal fashion. The innovative development under this proposal will facilitate the matching of architectural designs with devices optimised for maximum cell integration resulting in an enhancement in the availble active area of photovoltaics. The prototype PV-tile will be subjected to various testing regimes applicable to this development under both laboratory and weather conditions.
