Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project, by working closely with the leading industrial laboratories, aims at novel improved laser and semiconductor optical devices with applications in optical communications, computers, metrology and sensing. Current objectives relate to bit-rate, modulation techniques, line-width, frequency changes (chirp), tuning, and high Output power, all of which continue to be important topics for improved systems. Exploitation of these ideas will range from the immediate to ten years. Working closely with industry will automatically keep our projects under review ensuring that efforts of University and Industry are complementary and in the areas of greatest need. Our strategy of making modifications to existing state-of-the-art devices has an excellent track record, and ensures our designs are compatible with current industrial practice, and capable of rapid exploitation. Device modelling, using powerful but cheap PCs, includes internal visualisation of laser dynamics and allows rapid and effective comparison of alternative structures. This modelling has already helped to steer industrial research programmes, and updates to measurement equipment, computers and software will continue to make the work more accessible to industrial engineers.
