Summary on Grant Application Form |
The concept of a self modulating phase conjugate radar transponder is proposed where the scatterer returns the incident wave back along its trajectory. Configurations such as the corner cube reflector which exhibit good approximate phase conjugation are proposed in which the scatter cross section is appropriately modulated by an information signal. In a true phase conjugate system all the incident power falling on the target will be returned along the incident paths to the transmitter. With a modulated return, identification information or other data can then be demodulated. In this way existing radars may not only detect but also identify the targets. The target does not transmit and therefore only requires the relatively low power of the modulation system. The concept is fail safe since loss of power to the scatterer only removes the identity signal not the normal radar return. The proposed work will address initially congested seaway applications where low cost, low power systems are attractive. Further work will address indoor systems and special features.
