Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to develop a novel scanning force microscopy technique (termed Scanning Magnetoresistance Microscopy - SMRM) with the capability of mapping magnetoresistance on the sub- 100nm scale, in parallel with topographic and magnetic stray field (MFM) imaging modes. SMRM is then to be applied to the study of GMR and its relationship to domain structure in a range of systems, including UHV-sputtered Co/Cu multilayers and NiFe/Ag multilayers/spin valves for device applications. Of particular importance is the ability to study magnetisation processes in situ, in the films and patterned systems, with applied fields up to 0.4T. Work on commercial MR devices will focus on the microscopic origins of Barkhausen noise and its relation to current density and applied field angle, together with studies of topography, topographic roughness and domain wall pinning.
