Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal aims to establish a new manufacturing method for ceramics in diverse applications in which ceramic powder in suspension is deposited through a continuous ink jet printer nozzle. Stabilised ceramic and carbon (to produce micro engineered cavities) inks of varying powder loading will be prepared and characterised for the dominant printing variables, surface tension and viscosity. The printer variables will be tested with well-characterised organic liquids to find the ideal operating window for viscous fluids in conjunction with known theories of fluid dynamics in the jet printer. The printer will then be used to prepare ceramic monoliths and composites which reflect the topology characteristic of a wide range of functional and mechanical ceramic applications with attention being given to miniaturisation, complexity of form and speed of deposition. These will be assessed for integrity by mechanical or electrical testing and by extensive microscopy.
