A hybrid ray-tracing method and the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) is proposed to simulate the electromagnetic wave interaction from large three dimensional structures possessing fine detail. The introduction of a ray-tracing scheme into the FDTD method promises a versatile approach in modelling wave propagation in complex environments spanning many wavelengths. The ray-tracing will describe the global propagation of the wave in a simple environment. The local modelling of the fine detail of the structure will be accomplished using the FDTD method. This will give complete electromagnetic analysis from structures having large dimensions and possessing fine detail. The hybrid ray-tracing FDTD method promises the computational efficiency of the ray tracing method combined with the ability to accurately account for the diffraction around non-canonical shapes made from complex materials. The ray-tracing candidate chosen must also be able to interface with the FDTD method with relative ease.
