Summary on Grant Application Form |
Surface piercing propellers induce large cyclic loading and hence larger stress variations on transmission components than submerged propellers; the blade loading varies from a maximum in the bottom position (fully submerged) to approximately zero in the top position (fully out of the water). When considering the loading on the transmission components it can be seen that fatigue, vibration modes and resonance problems are of primary consideration when selecting a suitable geometry, transmission system, material for manufacture and even hull material/design. The information currently aailable in the public domain is not sufficient to allow the naval architect to confidently include this option in a structural analysis of sterngear, transmission and hull, and produce a vessel performance prediction aid for analysis of fitting water jets or surface piercing propellers.
