Summary on Grant Application Form |
Simple but powerful models of the spatial and dynamic properties of lasers open the door to understanding their physics and to the design of effective application systems. A promising new class of such models will be explored and developed, leading to a design package for optical scientists and engineers. The models combine the diffraction and dispersion properties of optical beams and pulses with nonlinear evolution of the field amplitude in a master equation form. This enables analysis and simulation of the behaviour of such systems with modest computer resources. This combined with the generality of the proposed master equation, will allow a PC-based package to be developed which may lead to a commercial spin-off.The capabilities of the basic model will be developed to maximise its range of application. In achieving that goal, significant basic research will be delivered. This will encompass new insights into nonlinear optical dynamics and, through the extra capabilities offered by this new approach, enhanced understanding of the operation and dynamics of specific lasers and other devices.
