Summary on Grant Application Form
At Cranfield we have obtained the strongest second harmonic generation (SHG) to date from a coloured L B film (resonantly enhanced) and also, more importantly, from a transparent film (J. Mater. Chem., February issue). This has been achieved by using a hydrophilic chromophore terminated at each end by hydrophobic alkyl chains. The molecules adopt a stretched rather than a U-shaped configuration and align with the shorter of the two groups adjacent to the water subphase. The molecules retain this orientation when deposited and using this technique quadratic SHG enhancement has been observed to thicknesses greater than 150 layers. Based on this discovery the aim is fabricate homomolecular films in which the layers interlock (molecular zips). Our preliminary studies have shown that this should lead to a more ordered structure, low optical loss and a significantly higher second-order susceptibility.
