The research project will involve the self-assembly of monomers in the shape of a range of difunctionalised [2] catenanes and bis[2] catenanes, as a result primarily of the 1,5-dioxynaphthaline/bipyridinium recognition motif templating their formation. The monomers hydroxy acids and diols will be converted into high molecular weight polymers, using methods that are know to form polyesters and polyurethanes with good conversions in high yields. These new polycationic polymers will be characterised using the well-established techniques of polymer chemistry. Their physical properties will be evaluated as a function of the ring sizes (their flexibilities and rigidities as well) of the component rings of the catenanes and the redox states of the pi-donating and pi-accepting aromatic ring systems within the component rings.
