Controlled living polymerisation by a radical pathway will lead to the availability of a new family of novel polymers. In addition monomers containing a range of useful functionality eg -CH2OH, -OH, -NH2 will be amenable to incorporation into block, etc, copolymers. The current proposal will seek to develop a transition metal mediated atom transfer polymerisation method for the living polymerisation of a range of functional vinyl monomers. Focus will be on systems which have been proven in organic synthesis for radical cyclisations. The key M(n)M(n+1) oxidation couple and the relative stabilities of the two oxidation states will be controlled by the use of phosphine and cyclopentadienyl ligands; a feature which we believe holds the key to this chemistry. We will be seeking to use alkyl and aryl iodides in conjunction with catalytic amounts of an appropriate transition metal salt in a range of target solvents, including heterogeneous aqueous polymerisation.
