Summary on Grant Application Form
Polybutadiene and polyisoprene of narrow molecular weight distribution and predominantly enchained in a 1,4-sense are to be synthesised having well controlled branched architecture. Two structures are planned: (a) the super-H and (b) the bifurcated trefoil which may be respectively regarded as a pair and a trio of three-armed stars coupled at the tip of a single arm of each. The related polyolefins will be prepared by catalytic hydrogenation. Characterisation of molecular weight will be by SEC and by light scattering. The rheology of all of these polymers will be examined in oscillatory mode as a function of frequency and temperature and the results compared with the predictions of parallel theoretical studies at Leeds. Super-H polymer selectively labelled with deuterium in the arms will be prepared and neutron scattering measurements made on samples which have been stretched and immediately quenched below Tg to test the tube model.
