Summary on Grant Application Form
There is now growing interest in economics and value of embedded generation (EG). As this generation is located close to electricity customers, it changes demand for transmission and distribution capacity , and alters system losses and reliability of supply. This means that the electricity produced by embedded generation, in some circumstances, may have a higher value than that supplied by central generation. Clearly, there is a need for a methodology capable of tracking and quantifying the costs/benefits of EGs energy production throughout the power system in order to establish a sound and stable market for EGs electricity. However, the problem of allocating the benefits/costs to EG is an extension of the more general question of how to price distribution services in a fully competitive electricity market. This project will therefore investigate fundamentally different approaches to pricing of distribution network services based on cost benefit system planning. In order to achieve economic efficiency and capture relevant probablistic phenomena in distribution systems including EG, short and long term marginal costing concepts will be implemented within a stochastic optimisation framework. This framework will be used for the evaluation of both optimal prices and real value of EG.
