Summary on Grant Application Form |
There has been considerable interest recently in means to improving the training of research students. This proposal aims to do that by providing a virtual laboratory across collaborating universities with intelligent agents managing individual learning programmes for each student. The three institutions (Durham, QMW, Strathclyde) have a common research interest in telecommunications traffic engineering, although with different specialities and approaches: by making all available to the student he/she would have access to all the tools developed in the other institutions and the synergy that comes from accessing knowledge from other groups. The virtual laboratory would use the agents to manage the provision of information (the virtual library) relevant to the students experience and research tasks; they would also select the appropriate tools from any of the 3 sites (the virtual toolset) across SuperJANET. Agents will act as mediators (or Personal Service Assistants (PSAs)) between the students and the information repositories and toolsets available. The PSA will search and filter information on behalf of users and will act as a bridge between different types of systems, information and environments.
