Cucurbituril is a rigid macrocycle and has been used as catalyst in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. This proposal seeks to explore the use of cucurbituril in polymer synthesis in order to obtain structurally controlled linear and dendritic polyrotaxanes, the latter representing a new class of polymers. The proposal is divided into two parts. (i) polymerisation of dialkynes with diazides in the presence of cucurbituril which will act as catalyst, template and molecular chaperone. A polyrotaxane is obtained possessing a defined number of threaded units. Extensive physical characterisation will elucidate structural dynamics, mechanical properties and structure property relationships of these polymers. (ii) synthesis of dendritic rotaxanes based on the same principle. Given that dendritic polymers by themselves are known to possess a variety of unusual properties and that the same is true for polyrotaxanes (in solution and in solid-state), one can expect that the combination of the two will provide intriguing, structurally defined functional materials. The generic concept allows for structural and functional diversity of these novel polymers. The monomers and cucurbituril can be prepared from simple starting materials.
