The proposed study focuses on the performance of the clay liner, as currently constructed to the NRA standard, in acting as a barrier to gas movement. Laboratory gas injection experiments will be performed on a number of clay types currently used in liner construction using a modified form of the BGS gas permeameter in which clay specimens are isotropically stressed and backpressured with water to simulate in situ conditions within the liner. Pre- and post-text examination of text samples will provide information on clay fabric and pore structures. In order to examine possible scale effects on transport properties, a number of field gas injection experiments will be performed at operational landfills. A theoretical study, supported by a literature review, is aimed at the development of quantitative models of the gas transport mechanism in compacted clays.
