Regeneration of catalytic cracking catalyst by burn-off in air creates 15,000 te/day of CO2 emissions and 850 te/day of SOx emissions in the UK (and roughly 25 times this amount worldwide). If CO2 substituted for air as the oxidant then the sulphur oxides are converted to H2S, which can be recovered and converted to useful elemental sulphur and hydrogen. Hydrogen present in the catalyst coke can also be recovered, permitted integration between catalyst regeneration and hydrogen production that leads to elimination of CO2 emissions. There may also be improvements in catalyst life and other savings. The proposed research will investigate the kinetics of the reaction between catalyst coke and CO2 to determine the feasibility of this process.
