The proposal is to study novel inorganic compounds which require accurate low temperature X-ray diffraction data. The first two classes of these display structure/ magnetic/ superconducting phase transitions at low temperatures, outside the range of normal laboratory X-ray diffraction equipment. The third class comprises co-ordinated carbonyl complexes that still require the accuracy given by extremely low temperatures in order to carry out precise structure/ enthalpy relationship studies.We propose, in order to carry out our studies, to use a diffraction facility (Fddd) unique in the UK and already commissioned at the Durham Crystallography Lab. (Temp range 10-300K) The Fddd diffractometer is ideally suited to this work and its capabilities have been proven in the area proposed. We cite three series of compounds for investigation at temperatures below that of liquid nitrogen which have never been fully characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It should be noted that these are of potential industrial interest. We aim to 'bench mark' these areas through accurate 3D characterisation and feed these parameters back into engineered synthesis for specific material properties. It should be possible at least to begin to map structure-properties for all series within the time scale.
