Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will be a two year design, modelling, construction and experimental study of microprocessor-controlled d.c. linear stepping motors. To enhance the reliability, repeatibility and stability of the control system, a model reference adaptive velocity controller will be implemented. The overall system is entirely contact-free as the motor is a brushless type and an opto-encoder will be used as a position sensor for control of the motor. The motor will use rare-earth permanent magnet materials with high curie temperature in order to improve the motor operating temperature. The motor will be simulated by using FEM for computing the static thrust, themagnetic flux distribution throughout the motor and mechanical vibration and noise level of the motor. These results will be compared with those obtained experimentally and the correlation among the analytical, numerical and measured values will be assessed.
