Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will investigate a spin-dependent optical phenomena in semiconductor quantum wells, quantum dots and microcavities. It will exploit newly developed ultrafast polarised reflection techniques to measure lifetimes, spin-relaxation, optical dephasing and quantum beats. In quantum wells the main topics will be well-width, temperature and magnetic-field dependencies of spin relaxation, measurements of dephasing and quantum beats from Zeeman splittings and the effects of oblique magnetic field for inducing optical transitions to normally non-allowed states. Effects of nuclear spin polarisation on the coherent optical response will be investigated. Quantum dot samples formed by near-field observation of 'statistical fine structure' in quantum well exciton transitions will be examined with the ultimate aim of observing the coherent optical response of a single electron-hole pair. Cavity polariton modes in microcavities will be investigated to study dephasing, spin-relaxation, magnetic-field induced mode mixing and vacuum-Rabi beating.
