Connection Admission Control (CAC) in an ATM network is the set of actions taken by the network at connection set-up to establish whether a connection may be accepted. The CAC has to find a free route across the network with sufficient bandwidth to give new connection sufficient resources without degrading established connections. This is of fundamental importance in ATM networks and has been researched world-wide (including at QMW). Most approaches use traffic descriptors as an input to some algorithm that also has knowledge of established traffic values. This is done on a link-by-link basis across the network.Research at QMW has been on a completely different approach using fuzzy techniques and a method for learning the traffic behaviours in an ATM link. This has been extended to using intelligent agents to communicate the knowledge of resources available on the network between nodes so that the CAC no longer has to be a step-by-step, link-by-link procedure, but can make decisions based on a wider picture. Having established the feasibility, support from EPSRC is now sought to implement demonstration and simulation software and to enable a proper evaluation to be performed of the benefits of this approach compared with more traditional ones.
