The proposed work is aimed at exploring the exciting, novel chemistry which occurs at surfaces at cryogenic temperatures (in the range from below 20K-77K). Two main surface techniques will be used, RAIRS to investigate adsorbate vibrations and low current LEED to correlate the results with their structures, on samples cooled using liquid helium. The current cryostat will be modified to achieve base temperatures ~ 15-18k. Closed cycle cooling will be investigated. Adsorption and reactions on surfaces in this temperature range has rarely been investigated before because of technical difficulties involved; however, preliminary results indicate that there is vast opportunity for studying a wide range of phenomena, which should give insights into a number f the fundamental issues of surface chemistry as well as being of considerable importance for industrial applications, such as catalysis. In a novel development, adsorption of molecules diluted in inert gas matrices will be carried out, to produce fragments by photolysis and introduce them onto the surface by gentle heating. Coadsorption will also give insights into charge transfer effects. Thermodynamics of surface processes can be investigated by studying the competition between physisorption/ chemisorption processes. Orientation of physisorbed species, will give insights into ultrathin film growth.
