Summary on Grant Application Form |
The need to develop lightweight vehicles necessitates the use of new fabrication methods, including laser welding, and the optimisation of steels used in their construction. This research aims to develop the use of laser welded to join steels (existing , new and zinc coated) for lightweight vehicles, and to investigate the resulting properties.A number of candidate steels with different carbon equivalents, inclusion contents and yield strengths (ranging from inclusion-free low carbon deep drawing steels to high strength low alloy and dual phase steels) will be laser welded using a range of welding conditions. Microstructures and mechanical properties, including formability, will be correlated with process variables and composition. To underpin the experimental work, modelling will be used to predict weld structures (thus facilitating future developments), to optimise the design of suitable filler materials (so improving properties and/or reduce fit-up problems, and to understand (hence be able to predict) the extent of springback when forming welded assemblies.
