Summary on Grant Application Form |
The end objective is a process in which a low percentage of a high value material such as platinum group metals in low concentrations (- 1%) can be reclaimed with a high yield by pyrometallurgy. In order to achieve this measurement of the feedstock properties at high temperatures (- 1700oC) is first needed. This entails the design of a suitable furnace and measurement techniques to be used at these temperatures. The process will use electroslag melting for the initial bulk volumetric preheating process. This will be followed by a high surface area refining phase. The process will be modelled and the interaction of the different heating methods will be investigated. The results will be incorporated in the overall process.Key Words: Electrical Engineering, Ceramics, Metals Processing Pyrometallurgy, rare metals, platinum group metals, process modelling.
