Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is concerned with exploring the interactive use of new sterescopic display technologies (including autostereo display) for the visualisation and manipulation of 3D images, such as those found in medical applications. Images will be generated on a parallel compute-server using an enhanced volume rendering code, and transmitted to a workstation using an existing purpose-designed distributed rendering protocol. Interaction will be carried out using direct manipulation, with 3D input devices, of the volumetric data. Specific issues to be explored include: effectiveness of different stereo displays; exploration of fast rendering techniques for stereo display, and image accuracy issues (coherency of left and right eye views); derivation of new techniques for direct manipulation of volumetric (voxel) data; methods to support multivolume datasets and multiple classification schemes. A part of the project will be devoted to developing and assessing a demonstrator application for radiation therapy planning in 3D. Collaborators are Sharp laboratories of Europe and Christie Hospital, Manchester.
