We have recently demonstrated that individual molecules may be manipulated on a Si [111] surface using the tip of an STM under room temperature operation. We now propose to refine, extend and optimise this technique by developing more sophisticated software to control the position and other parameters [voltage, tunnel current etc.] of the tip. The interaction of the tip and absorbed molecules will be studied using a comparison of their response to manipulation. We will focus on C60, C70, fullerene derivatives and carbon nanotubes on various substrates, chosen to have either a strong [e.g. Si [111] -7x7] or a weak [e.g. H passivated Si [111] ] interaction with the adsorbed molecules. We wish to investigate the stability, conductivity and masking effects of clusters of C60 and C60 derivatives. In addition we will form patterns aligned to pre-formed registration marks and use our new techniques to fabricate experimental devices with an active region formed by one or a small number of molecules.
