Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research programme represents a novel approach involving both discrete and finite element analysis and makes use of the complementary experience and expertise of the principal co-investigators at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities. The intention of the proposed research programme is to build on the extensive test data available from the Edinburgh University model and field experiments, in order to develop a more rational numerical model of the backfill-arch bridge interaction problem. The development of the numerical model will be carried out by the Research Assistant at Glasgow University, where a considerable experience in both discrete and nonlinear finite element modelling exists. In the second year of the proposal, the numerical model will be validated by comparison to the physical model field test data.
