A common cause of electrical breakdown in high voltage switchgear and electricity distribution plant are electrical tress which grow through solid insulation. Recent UK study has greatly improved understanding in this area. The shape of the trees, which depends in the material, electrical stress and environmental conditions, is critical in determining the rate of degradation but this cannot be predicted by present physical models. We would like to develop the Discharge - Avalanche model of electrical trees so that the shape of the trees can be predicted and so that their growth may be better understood. We expect that this will ultimately benefit users of high voltage insulation in three ways: (i) it will enable better prediction of degradation rates and residual life of existing plant; (ii) it will make prognosis based on discharge pattern recognition more accurate; and (iii) it will provide an understanding of the key material parameters which are to be controlled for improved treeing resistance. This would make UK insulation products and electrical services more reliable, and possibly cheaper, and it would maintain the UK's existing advantage in understanding in this critical area of technology.
