Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project aims to obtain data on multicomponent mass transfer for the system toluene/acetone + phenol/water. Much of the work will be done with single drops in unhindered rinse but experiments will also be done on single drops in a rotating disc contractor and for drop swarms in a 23 stage counter-current flow RDC (under conditions of no drop coalescence). Stefan-Maxwell molecular diffusion coefficients are required to describe multicomponent systems but if convective processes are dominant ( as inside large, clean drops) then a simpler approach may be adopted. Marangoni disturbances have been observed in the proposed system, settling in at different critical concentrations of acetone and phenol: behaviour with two transferring solutes, in the various possible directions of transfer and phase dispersed, will be examined more thoroughly. The influence of added surfactant on mass transfer and Marangoni effects will be investigated.
