Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal requests partial funding of research equipment to allow collaborative studies to be carried out between the newly formed Optoelectronic Systems Research Group in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Bristol and Wireless Systems Int. Ltd, BNR Europe Ltd and Hewlett Packard. The aim of this work is to develop techniques to design, construct and assess high speed optical sub-systems for a range of communication and signal processing applications. The work will draw on past research on novel optoelectronic technologies recently studied by Professor White and Dr Penty in collaboration with Hewlett Packard and BNR Europe Ltd, and those of Wireless Systems Int. Ltd in high speed electrical system design. In particular, the research will aim to adapt system concepts developed for radio, microwave and millimetre wave communication links to optoelectronic systems. The initial work will concentrate on the design of effective sources for ultra high speed communication systems operating at bit-rates in excess of 10Gb/s where methods for optimising drive and device requirements for the generation of low jitter modulated pulses will be studied. Four application areas will be investigated as each require different operational parameters, namely; (i) 40Gb/s time division multiplexed pulse transmision systems, (ii) distribution of microwave and millimetre wave signals using vertical cavity lasers, (iii) high speed directly modulated digital sources for optoelectronic switching systems and (iv) short pulse generation for instrumentation applications.Key Words: Communications, Networks, Optics, Lasers
