Summary on Grant Application Form |
The ability to develop a well-defined theoretical or empirical classification scheme is a basic step in conducting any form of scientific or systematic inquiry into the phenomena under investigation. In the case of this project, then phenomena under examination are discrete manufacturing systems and the purpose of the investigation will be to identify taxonomic characters which will not only enable grouping, but will help determine and predict the laws and relationships which govern the operational behaviour of a manufacturing system. The work will also develop guidelines and principles for constructing and testing manufacturing classifications. The research is based on novel comparisons drawn from the science of diversity, systematics, and the 200 years of experience that biological taxonomy has to offer.
