Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for a structural dynamics testing system which will combine the best features if two currently used techniques, namely shaking tables and pseudo-dynamic testing. The main aim if the research will be to create a novel dynamic testing system in which the critical section of a structure is tested by reproducing the forces and displacements imposed I it by the reminder of the structure, which is modelled numerically. Since the tests will run in real time, the system will represent a major improvement on existing pseudo-dynamic test facilities, which run with greatly expanded timescales. The test procedure will be developed and validated using a series of large-scale model tests. The proposal is made with the support of Instron Limited, who have a long-standing interest in the development of sophisticated dynamic testing systems. A grant of 100,000 towards the project has already been approved by the Wolfson Foundation.
