Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research will underwrite the concept of Self-Healing Overlay Coatings (SHOC) Technology. These coatings, based on the standard MCrA1Y systems, will be produced by a combination of plasma spraying and chemical vapour deposition to form a chemically-graded coating enriched in chlorium and aluminium. A novel feature will be the introduction of particulate phases, during plasma spraying, which will have two discrete functions during subsequent corrosion. Particles rich in chlorium or aluminium will act as reservoir phases for these beneficial elements whilst other phases, rich in yttrium or carbon, will scavenge sulphur and titanium, respectively. Identification of suitable phases will be based on thermodynamic computations using the SAGE code. Their optimum locations and morphology will be determined as part of this project. Coating behaviour will be assessed in corrosion and four-point bend tests. A committee of industrial collaborators will monitor progress.
