Summary on Grant Application Form |
A capability for advanced DNS of turbulent combustion will be developed. A new code known as SENGA will be tested and validated. It will incorporate a fully-compressible solution algorithm for the governing equations of turbulent combustion, with spectral or sixth order compact finite difference methods for statial derivatives and third order Runge-Kutta time steeping. The code will be parallelised and optimised for the Cray T3D computer and will be run using resources already allocated under the HPCI Combustion Consortium. A series of reduced chemical mechanisms will be implemented in order to improved greatly the treatment of chemistry within the DNS formulation. Two-step, three-step and four-step reduced mechanisms will be investigated. Production runs will be carried out to validate the code against previous work and new runs will be carried out to obtain information on counter-gradient transport on flames and on the evolution of the flame surface density. Partially premixed flames will be investigated.
