Summary on Grant Application Form |
The adhesive and fractional forces between individual sub-micron ceramic particles will be directly measured, using a novel method in which absolute contact stiffness is determined as a function of particle separation. Control over environmental humidity, of surface hydrophobic/philic nature and over a modest range of temperature will give quantitative measure of the relevance of these factors, and hence of the dominant mechanisms of particle-particle interaction. The results are of importance in agglomerate formation and stability, and in fundamental mechanisms of friction and adhesion.
