Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to use neutron reflection and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to study planar monolayer conformation and bulk micellar structure in the same surfactant system. Partial deuterium labelled surfactants will be used in the two neutron experiments, which will significantly improve the resolution and will enable us to obtain structural information inside the flat and curved layers concerning tilting, bending, projection and roughness for small fragments. Such detailed structural information is vital for revealing the nature of monolayer packing. Since planar monlayers are in equilibrium with micellar aggregates in solution , the combined study will lead to a real understanding of surfactant assemblies. The study will cover a series if industrially important surfactants including alkyl phenol ethoxylates, alkyl ethoxylates and alkyl ethoxy ionic surfactants and will examine the effects of chain configuration, size of ethoxylated head group and inclusion of a charge at the end of the ethoxylate group on the structural conformation of the planar monolayers and micellar aggregates.
