The aim of the proposed research is to study the structure and behaviour of surfactant films adsorbed at solid surfaces from supercritical fluid solutions using the state-of-the-art laser technique, Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (SFS). The application of SFS to supercritical fluid research is feasible and entirely novel. The proposed research is relevant to industry (eg Unilever) because, while adsorption is a key element in supercritical fluid technology, it is poorly understood. The project is timely because (1) it will address fundamental issues concerning the molecular characterisation of monolayer films in supercritical fluids for the first time, and (2) it will guide the design of a new generation of supercritical fluid surfactants for use in industry.
