Summary on Grant Application Form |
The concept of ionisation of gaseous macromolecules will be tried. Gaseous neutral macromolecules will be formed by infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption of their frozen solutions, using the frozen solvents as the matrices, and their reactions with gaseous metal cations and also simple anions investigated. Chemical ionisation of macromolecules will provide the basis for analysis and characterisation of non-polar polymers, will be more robust, predictable and sensitive than existing mass spectrometric techniques for polymers and will open up a fresh field of gas-phase ion chemistry.
