Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this work is to build on existing research concerning nonlinear all-optical and electro-optic effects in semiconductor ridge waveguide devices, to study the potential for optical beam manipulation in two dimensional (2D) optical slab waveguides. By combining spatial and temporal nonlinearities in these pseudo 2D micro-optical tables, control of the relative strengths of absorptive and refractive nonlinearities may be possible. New forms of ultrafast spatial beam scanning, focusing and shaping can be envisaged with exciting applications including new types of laser system, optical switch and ultrahigh speed single shot camera.
