Summary on Grant Application Form
Tha aim is to study in depth the new colloidal clustering effect recently discovered at Keele (Nature submitted). This effect, in which colloidal particles were observed clumping together reversibly was explained in terms of the adhesion energy of the particle surfaces. Ceramic, polymer and blood corpuscles showed this effect. Our objective is to measure the clusters more systematically using a new Malvern instrument, to vary the adhesion systematically by chemcial additions and to show how this technology may be applied to industrial applications. We believe the research will show that the clustering phenomena can be used industrially to measure collodial particle surface chemistry in situ, and we propose to involve three companies in this research project if granted.
